Mount Carmel Medical Group Improves Depression Screening in Primary Care Practices

Mt Carmel Medical Group

Behavoral health disorders affect nearly one in five Americans. Yet in primary care settings, these issues go untreated about 50% of the time. Mount Carmel Medical Group, part of the Mount Carmel Health System with more than 250 primary care and specialty care providers throughout central Ohio, tapped Epion to help improve depression screening in the primary care setting.

Prior to using Epion’s digital screeners, clinical staff verbally administered the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), a nine-item self-reported screening tool, during patient intake. The medical group suspected that low treatment rates could be attributed to a number of factors, including screening methods, administrative burden on staff and discomfort among staff and patients having to discuss personal matters.

Leveraging Epion’s renowned digital behavioral health screeners during check-in, Mount Carmel’s PCPs are able to increase the number of patients screened as well as identify more patients living with or at risk for depression, anxiety, substance abuse and other mild to moderate behavioral health disorders. Utilizing touch screen devices that send data directly to a physician’s EHR, Epion’s screeners have been proven to identify 3.5 times more patients at risk for behavioral health issues when compared with manual screening methods
