MSU Health Care: Employing Digital Health to Drive Patient Engagement

We can officially declare that we are in the 21st century with 97 percent of Americans now owning a cellphone of some kind. About 75 percent of adults in the United States have a desktop or laptop computer, while roughly half own a tablet computer. 

Almost half of patients in the U.S. use these types of technology to communicate with their healthcare providers. Approximately 60 percent of patients are interested in using digital communication tools because they offer convenience while still delivering personalized care. 

Many patients enjoy digital data access because they can review their information for medical errors, gain more control over their health and better manage chronic conditions. Healthcare providers are using digital health technologies in their efforts to reduce inefficiencies, improve access, reduce costs, increase quality and make medicine more personalized for patients. 

According to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) most recent definition of digital health, it “connects and empowers people and populations to manage health and wellness, augmented by accessible and supportive provider teams working within flexible, integrated, interoperable and digitally-enabled care environments that strategically leverage digital tools, technologies and services to transform care delivery.”  Three key trends rising to the top of the digital health landscape are consumerization of healthcareaccess for underserved communities and application of big data. 

Under the umbrellas of consumerization and access is a focus on patient engagement. Increasing patient engagement is important for improved outcomes, as research has linked higher levels of it to the greater use of preventive care, less smoking and obesity, more positive rankings of relationships with providers, less delay in seeking care, greater awareness of treatment guidelines, improved clinical indicators and a reduced number of hospital and emergency visits and lower hospital readmission rates.  

Here at Epion Health, we recently announced an agreement to provide digital patient engagement tools to MSU Health Care and their patients. Through our collaboration, MSU Health Care patients will be able to search for a provider, check in for their in-person or telehealth appointment and pay any copays and balances due – all from their mobile or desktop device.
